What problem it solves

Feature-flag services are built for companies with fifty teams. Most projects have three flags and one person who remembers what they do. Tern is for them.

How it works

Run tern flags and you get a table of every flag, its environment and its rollout percentage. Run tern set new-checkout 50 and half of your users see the new checkout. The server is 900 lines of Go and stores everything in one file you can commit.

Lessons

The best decision was making every command print exactly what it changed. The second best was refusing to add a web dashboard for two years.
